Help! My hair is greasy and I just washed it - what am I doing wrong?

Summer is just around the corner and that means the weather and humidity are heating up. It’s completely normal to notice a change in your hair between the seasons. And, while we do consider ourselves hair wizards, unfortunately, we can’t change the weather. But, what we can do is help you work out if there’s another factor that is contributing to your hair being greasy just after you washed it. If you’ve ever found yourself horrified by those people who wash their hair “I don’t know maybe once or twice a week” then this article is for you!

Just like our skin, some of us have oilier scalps than others, which means we need to be using products that are specifically designed for our hair types. Our team of experts at Enigma Hair and Body can help you work out a hair care regime that is right for you. We can consult with you about your hair concerns either before your hair appointment, or you can simply drop in and we can guide you in the right direction.

So, let’s get into the nitty-gritty of why your hair isn’t feeling luscious, cleansed and refreshed after that sixth shampoo this week!

1. Using in-correct shampoos

Believe it or not, just because shampoo is expensive does not mean it’s right for you. If you are using an incorrect product for your scalp that is full of wax and fillers, it can cause a build-up on your scalp, therefore, giving you oily hair. It’s like using mature aged skincare on young skin, it’s going to make you break out. The girls at Enigma Hair and Body are here to guide you through the weird and wonderful world of shampoos and conditioners to help pick the one that’s right for you.

2. What ingredients should I avoid using if I have oily hair?

Generally speaking, people with finer hair usually suffer from greasier hair. And, it’s not just your shampoo and conditioner that you need to consider when it comes to the ingredients. When purchasing oils, creams, waxes, and sprays, it’s important that we don’t add more grease or weight to an already oiled machine. Our top tip is to avoid all products that contain wax, and heavy-based creams when styling your hair.

3. Wash your brush

Once more for the people in the back - clean your hair brush! Our scalp sheds an incredible amount of skin cells every single day, and they generally get caught in your hair brush. Clients tell us that they avoid brushing their hair because it makes it oilier - this is simply not true, and you should always brush your hair to help with cell regeneration, and hair growth. It actually has to do with the amount of oil, and dirt that is trapped in your brush (gross, we know) so it’s important if you are trying to combat oily hair that you clean your brush every week. Our pro tip: Take it in the shower with you and clean it with a small amount of your regular shampoo. It may seem like a tedious task, but trust us, your hair will be thankful for a squeaky clean brush that is rid of oils, and gunk.

4. Wash your hair at least twice

You must do two shampoos! The first cleanses and removes dirt from the scalp into the roots, the second shampoo cleanses and removes the dirt from the hair (This one actually cleans the hair). If you only shampoo once, you move the oil into the roots then lock it in when you put your conditioner on. Shampoo 3 times if needed, you should shampoo as many times as it takes to get a nice lather up.. generally 2, maybe 3 if you have extended your wash cycle. You should aim to wash your hair 1-2 week max!

Let’s be real, there’s really nothing worse than spending money on a brand new hairstyle, especially colour to have it not last, or be ruined by something as simple as oily hair. Like everything, good things take time, and we can work one-on-one with you to combat any hair issues you may have to ensure that you get the absolute maximum out of your colour, hairstyle, and time at Enigma Hair and Body.
